How a shadow box works

The picture is split into layers, each cut out and placed a little way behind the last. Seen through the frame, every layer's edge shows, which is what gives it that deep, papercut look. Every one is designed from your picture, so it's one-off and made to your request.

Two styles, depending on your picture: a crisp line-cut scene (flat layers, clean edges — good for a landscape or a simple silhouette), or a textured relief version where the subject itself — a pet, a person — is sculpted with real surface detail rather than just a flat cut-out shape.

Relief is an interpretation of your photo, not a copy of it, so it won't look like a photograph. We've tested it and it comes out close, and you see a preview before anything is made. Like everything we layer, it's made to be looked at from about 1 metre away: up close you'll see the layers and how it's built.

Known weak spot, being honest about it: small or very thin details (fine ears, thin legs, a lighthouse) don't come through as crisply as a bolder subject — we'll tell you if your picture is a tricky case before you order.
